Comment by Francesca Di Leo January 23, 2009 @ 4:48 pmAs someone already said, asking an English teacher to choose a favorite poem is asking the impossible, but I do love the poems of Phyllis Wheatley because of the profound spirituality and strong imagery she used. Born in Africa in the 1700′s, Phillis was kidnapped , enslaved brought to America and enslaved. Phillis was educated by her owners who encouraged her writing. Her popularity as a poet eventually brought her freedom. Despite a life of ill health and poverty, Phillis wrote over 100 poems and has been an inspiration to African-American and feminist poets.
